[NEWS] Deep Purple tribute album coming next month

A tribute to Deep Purple’s 1971 studio album Machine Head – which sparked such hits as “Smoke on the Water”, “Space Truckin’” and “Highway Star” – has brought the biggest names in heavy metal and rock ‘n’ roll to the recording studio in honour of the hard rock group.
Set for release on September 25, Re-Machined – A Tribute to Deep Purple’s ‘Machine Head’ features 10 covers by bands and artists the likes of Metallica, Iron Maiden and Carlos Santana. The album marks the 40th anniversary of Deep Purple’s release.
Track Listing:
- “Smoke on the Water” – Carlos Santana & Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach
- “Highway Star” – Chickenfoot
- “Maybe I’m a Leo” – Glenn Hughes, Chad Smith & Luis Maldonado
- “Picture of Home” – Black Label Society
- “Never Before” – Kings of Chaos (Joe Elliott, Steve Stevens, Duff McKagan, Matt Sorum & Arlan Schierbaum)
- “Smoke on the Water” – The Flaming Lips
- “Lazy” – Jimmy Barnes, Joe Bonamassa
- “Space Truckin’” – Iron Maiden
- “When a Blind Man Cries” – Metallica
- “Highway Star” – Glenn Hughes, Steve Vai, Chad Smith & Lachlan Doley
While Machine Head only had seven tracks, the tribute has two recordings of “Smoke on the Water” and of “Highway Star”, as well as Metallica’s rendition of the B-side, “When a Blind Man Cries”.
Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson said the band recorded a cover of “Space Truckin’” in 2006, but never released it:
“
Initially, we didn’t think we’d be able to contribute anything due to our touring commitments. Then we remembered “Space Truckin’”, which we’d recorded as a single B-side during our A Matter of Life and Death album session, but never used. However now, thanks to Kevin Shirley’s remixing skills, we’re able to include it on Re-Machined.
